Wally has been investing in energy and clean energy companies and projects for 15 years. Wally runs EnerTech’s Canadian operations from Toronto. His specific areas of interest and responsibility include opportunities in alternative fuels and storage, power quality and conversion, water re-use in energy, Wind turbine technologies, power electronics, advanced materials, motor controls, automation and sensors.
Prior to EnerTech, Wally was with Royal Bank of Canada (“RBC”), where he was a Managing Director of the bank’s private equity fund and responsible for the Energy Technology and Advanced Technology Fund. Prior to that Wally was in RBC’s investment banking division (RBC Capital Markets). Wally has an extensive background in the venture capital business which includes a series of successful IPO’s, M&A and turnaround transactions throughout his 20 year career in the finance business.
In addition, Wally previously produced and hosted the weekly financial television show “Money Week” which featured over 200 guest interviews from Canadian and U.S. money managers over a 14 year period. Wally was also previously involved in politics and sat as a local Councilor in the town of Milton (3 terms) and on the board of the Ontario College of Pharmacists (Chair of finance).
Wally was past Chairman of the Banff Venture Forum Cleantech Stream and Chairman of the 2014 Canadian Venture Capital Association conference in Ottawa in May, 2014. He sits on the boards of both the CVCA and the Venture Capital Association of Alberta (VCAA) as well as EnerTech’s portfolio companies Enbala Power Networks, FilterBoxx and n-Dimension Solutions. Wally is an observer on the boards of HPC Energy and Distech Controls.
Wally received a BA from the University of Western Ontario and has completed a number of securities-related courses and programs including the Canadian Securities Institute (CSC program) and Canadian Investment Finance (CIF I, II &III).
Khalil has over 20 years of leveraging his technical, analytical and capital markets experience to serve high growth technology companies. He helps entrepreneurs get the most out of their successful enterprises through his understanding of key value and market drivers. He works with our partners to build their companies and achieve their goals.
Khalil has successfully exited through initial public offerings (IPOs) or acquisitions a number of in companies including; Genesis Microchip Inc. (NASDAQ:GNSS – subsequently acquired by STMicroelectronics NYSE:STM); Cognicase Inc. (TMX:COG – subsequently acquired by CGI Inc. TMX:CGI); and Simba Technologies, acquired by Pivotal Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PVTL – subsequently acquired by Broadcom Corporation NASDAQ: BRCM).
He started his career in venture capital with Working Ventures Canadian Fund, at the time Canada’s largest venture capital firm where he participated in over 20 transactions across diverse industries and stages. Khalil specialized in semiconductor and middleware software companies, and successfully led five investments. He then joined VenGrowth Capital Partners, where he led seven investments in the communications industry.
He currently serves as a Director of Natural Systems Utilities and Luminultra and is a member of the Water Environment Federation and American Water Works Association.
Khalil holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and a B. Comm in Finance and Accounting from Concordia University.
Khalil is an avid football fan (of both the NFL and the European type). He speaks a number of languages, and enjoys leisure travel.
Mr. Kevin Slough is the President & Chief Executive Office at FilterBoxx Water & Environmental Corp. He is a successful entrepreneur who co-founded FilterBoxx in 2001. Kevin’s extensive knowledge and experience in the industrial water and wastewater treatment industry has lead the company to become the leading supplier of packaged water treatment systems to Canada’s oil and gas industry. Prior to founding FilterBoxx, Kevin held senior engineering positions with Komex International (now part of Worley Parsons) and Earth Tech.
Mr. Slough has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Regina; a Master’s in Business Administration from The University of Calgary. He is a professional Engineer registered in Alberta & British Columbia
Ms. Laird is a corporate director with more than 30 years of experience in the energy industry. She has held senior positions in several major energy companies and has a diverse background in managing energy trading and marketing, midstream assets, information technology and environmental portfolios.
Ms. Laird served as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Midstream for Encana Corporation and PanCanadian Energy Corporation, a predecessor of Encana, from 1997 until 2002. She was formerly President of NrG Information Systems Inc. and held various positions of increasing responsibility with Norcen Energy Inc., North Canadian Oils Inc., Canpet Marketing Limited and Shell Canada Limited.
Ms. Laird serves as Chair of Synodon Inc., lead director of AlterNRG Corp. and is a director of Keyera Corp. and FilterBoxx Water and Environmental Corp., a private Alberta based company. She is a former board member of the Alberta Electric System Operator, Enerflex Systems Income Fund, Canetic Resources Trust, Canadian Oil Sands Trust and Alliance Pipeline Inc.
Ms. Laird also serves on the board of Calgary Counselling Centre, serves as the Chair of MindFuel (formerly the Alberta Science Foundation) and is a former Chair of Innovate Calgary and former director of Hull Child and Family Services, the Calgary Health Region, the United Way of Calgary and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).
Ms. Laird holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the University of Western Ontario, earned an MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University in Toronto, and has an ICD.D Designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Stephan is founding partner of Arcana Capital, an independent advisory firm for private equity direct and indirect investment strategies.
From 2013 until summer 2016, Stephan led the private equity team at Rianta Capital, a single family office in London where he managed the direct (lead and co-investments) and co-managed the indirect (funds) investment strategies.
Before earning his doctorate in economic science, from 2008 until 2011, Stephan established and developed the direct investment portfolio at Gaydoul Group, a single family office in Zurich, during the years 2009-2011 as head of the direct investment division.
Stephan started his career in 2004 at UBS Investment Bank working in their M&A division.
Stephan studied at Samford University, Wilhelms Universität Münster and Otto Beisheim School of Management and holds a bachelor degree in finance (B.Sc.), a master of laws (LL.M.) and doctorate in business (Dr. rer. pol.).
